Japanese Industrial Standard
JIS A 1481-1
- Purpose / scope
- Qualitative identification of asbestos in commercial bulk materials and building products.
- Applicable sample types
- Building materials and other bulk products whose layers or components may contain asbestos.
- Analysis principle
- Material characteristics are assessed through visual and microscopical examination, including polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining.
- Sample preparation overview
- The sample is documented, separated into relevant layers where appropriate, and prepared so representative material can be examined.
- Analysis procedure overview
- Prepared portions are inspected for fibres, and their optical properties are evaluated against established identification criteria.
- Result interpretation / reporting
- Findings identify whether asbestos was detected and provide the sample and method information needed to understand the result.

ISO 22262-1
- Purpose / scope
- Sampling and qualitative determination of asbestos in commercial bulk materials.
- Applicable sample types
- Commercial products, manufactured materials, insulation, fireproofing, and minerals from which fibres can be prepared for identification.
- Sample preparation overview
- Representative portions are selected and prepared using techniques appropriate to the material matrix and condition.
- Identification / analysis procedure overview
- Fibres are examined using polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining, with additional instrumental checks used when required.
- Reporting information
- The report records the sample identification, analytical method, result, and relevant observations or limitations.
